Below is an 1800s farmhouse in Northern California that needed some privacy so the two of us built an old style of fencing that uses redwood palings. The challenge was to work around trees that were in the fence's path. This rare style of fencing is very doable given the right budget and time frame.
A charming footbridge on a client's estate crossed the meandering natural stream but all around it were bare earth and weeds from years of neglect. We felt like a carefree wildflower garden would compliment the area best and chose mostly lupine and poppies for the transformation. The lupine (in their second year here) were planted from seed and wasted no time joining the yellow water iris and willows along the banks for an entirely new look to this part of the garden.
The meditation garden directly below came about because our client was told by her daughter (who'd seen our work elsewhere) to hire us, ask no questions and just turn us loose to do whatever we wanted to do. How often does that happen? With an open pallet Tom chose to create a lush meditation garden where an old '70s jacuzzi once sat. With a fountain at its center and 7 Kwanzan cherry trees circling it this garden gave our client a quiet, intimate place to sit and read and watch the birds play in the fountain. A circular stone patio with creeping thyme in the spaces pulls it all together and offers a feeling of age and permanence.
A family member purchased this suburban home some 15 years ago and had been longing to do something with the empty backyard. The idea of a patio was floated and we came up with a plan that involved a stone patio encircled by a stacked stone wall. The area for the patio sloped in two different directions so creating a level grade was our biggest challenge. Thesse pictures were taken shortly after the project was completed and before trees and perennials were added. Not surprisingly the family and friends now spend a lot more time outdoors in the yard than they used to.
